ABIGAIL - meaning “Cause of Joy” or “Father’s Joy” We find the story of Abigail in 1 Samuel 25 in the Bible. It is noted that she was a wise and beautiful Israelite woman. She was married to Nabal, who was extremely rich, but unfortunately he was a very harsh man. After Samuel died and was buried in Ramah, David went to the Wilderness of Paran where Nabal was busy sheering his sheep in a place called Carmel. During the time David and his people were in the wilderness, servants from Nabal were tending to their sheep. For the time the two groups were together, David’s people were good to them. They never hurt them, took anything from them and protected them at night. When David heard that Nabal was in Carmel, he sent ten young men to him to ask for food and water, but Nabal was rude and refused to help them. David wanted to take revenge and took a hundred men with swords to go up to Nabal. One of the young men went to Abigail to tell her what was happening. She was upset when she heard this, and as a wise women, she quickly made a plan. She loaded donkeys with huge amounts of food and wine and sent her servants to take them to David. She did not tell her husband what she was up to. Abigail went ahead to meet David and his men. She fell down before his feet and begged him not to attack and make war. She was a believer in the Lord and told David that she believed he will become the ruler over Israel. David was impressed with her humility and wisdom and he listened to her. Due to Abigail’s actions, she prevented war and massive bloodshed. David told her to be blessed and return to her home. When she got home, her husband, Nabal was drunk and she could not speak to him. The next morning she told him what happened. Nabal got upset and he became like stone. About ten days after the incident, Nabal died. When David heard of Nabal’s death, he proposed to Abigail and married her. They later had a son called Chileab (2 Samuel 3:3) who was also known as Daniel (1 Chronicles 3:1). We can learn a lot from Abigail. Even though she was beautiful and had riches and power, she was also balanced. She was extremely courageous and did not hesitate to put her own life at risk to try and save others. She also prevented David from committing a sin as vengeance does not belong to us, but to God as we read in Deuteronomy 32:35 and in Romans 12:19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord .”
