RAHAB After the death of Moses, Joshua was instructed by God to take the Israelites and cross the Jordan River. In their path was the fortified city of Jericho. Jericho lied in the Jordan Valley and was inhabited by the Canaanites. Joshua decided to send two spies to Jericho before they proceed their journey. It is in this city of Jericho where we meet Rahab. Rahab was a prostitute who lived in a house in Jericho with her parents, brothers and sisters. Their house was situated on the wall of the city. The two spies came to Rahab’s house and decided to stay there, (Joshua 2). The King of Jericho got news about the spies in his city, and he sent men to Rahab’s house to find them. Rahab decided to hide the spies on top of the roof of her house and she told the men pursuing them that they had already left and if they hurried, they could still catch up with them. The men did not search her house but rather immediately left to look for the spies. Once they were on the road to Jordan and out of the city, the gates to the city were shut. Rahab had heard the stories of the Israelites and their Lord and went to the spies and said: I know that the Lord has given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you . For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the other side of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath ”, (Joshua 2:9-11). She then asked the spies to show kindness to her and her family as she kept them safe and away from the King’s men. The two spies swore an oath to her that if she met the three conditions, she and her family would be spared at the coming invasion: Firstly, Rahab had to hang a scarlet-colored cord outside her window. Secondly, her family must be inside her house and not leave the house. Lastly, she was not allowed to tell anybody about the spies or the plans that they had. Rahab agreed these conditions. She sent the spies away and told them to go and hide in the mountain for three days. By then their pursuers would be back in the city and they could then go and join the Israelites. Once the spies returned to Joshua and told them all that they have seen, they crossed the Jordan and got themselves ready for the invasion. At that stage the city of Jericho was closed down and nobody could enter or exit the city. Rahab followed the instructions the spies gave her, and when the city fell, she and her family were not harmed. Joshua sent in the spies to collect her and her family before they burnt the city to the ground. From that day forward Rahab travelled and stayed with the Israelites. She later married Salmon, an Israelite from the tribe of Judah. Out of her linage Joseph, the husband of Mary who was the mother of Jesus, was born. Rahab was an unclean prostitute who lived in a city filled with pagan culture. Once she heard the story of the Israelites and what their Lord did for them, she understood and believed in the power of God. She followed the directions given to her. Rahab was the first recorded Gentile who believed in the Lord. She can almost be seen as a foreshadow of the Church to come. Her life was spared because of her faith: “By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe, when she had received the spies with peace”, (Hebrews 11:31). Rahab was saved as she believed that “the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath”, (Joshua 2:11). It does not matter what your background, past or culture is, God is forgiving and impartial to all who accept and believe in Him . Although Rahab had a terrible past, she was fully accepted by the Israelites with no judgement or condemnation. Due to her belief, her slate was wiped clean. We can also see that when we accept Jesus in our lives, this might mean that we have to turn away from what we are comfortable and used to. She had to leave the city and the home she knew and start over fresh. Always remember the words of Paul: “T herefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God —this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind . Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will”, (Romans 12:2).
