ELIZABETH
-
meaning
“God
is
my oath”
Luke
1
informs
us
that
Elizabeth
was
married
to
priest
called
Zacharias
and
she
was
a
descendant
of
Aaron.
Elizabeth
was
no
longer
a
young
woman
and
she
was
not
able
to
have
any
children.
She
lived
a
righteous
and
blameless
life.
While
Zacharias
was
burning
incense
in
the
Temple,
the
Angel
Gabriel
appeared
before
him
and
told
him
that
Elizabeth
would
fall
pregnant.
They
would
have
a
son
and
must
call
him
John.
John
was
prophesied
to
become
and
extremely
important
figure
in
the
future
as
he
would
go
before
the
Messiah
and
turn
many
of
the
Israelites
to
God.
Because
of
this,
John
would
not
be
allowed
to
consume
any
alcohol
and
he
would
be
filled
with
the
Holy
Spirit
even
while
growing
in
his
mother’s
womb.
Zacharias
was
unbelieving
and
as
a
result,
he
was
not
able
to
speak
until
the
prophecy
was
fulfilled.
Elizabeth
fell
pregnant
with
John.
She
was
very
excited,
but
she
hid
herself
away
for
the
first
five
months
of
her
pregnancy.
When
she
was
six
months
pregnant,
an
Angel
appeared
to
Mary
and
told
Mary
that
she
would
have
an
immaculate
conception
through
the
Holy
Spirit
and
that
she
would
give
birth
to
Jesus.
He
also
told
Mary
that
Elizabeth
fell
pregnant
in
her
old
age
and
that
nothing
is
impossible
for
God.
Mary
and
Elizabeth were related.
Mary
believed
and
went
up
to
Judah
to
visit
Elizabeth.
God
chose
these
two
women
to
be
from
the
same
family.
It
must
have
been
scary
for
Mary
to
fall
pregnant
without
a
husband,
but
God
chose
an
older
woman
and
a
relative
of
her
who
was
also
going
through
a
miraculous
experience
to
comfort
and
guide
her.
As
soon
as
Mary
greeted
Elizabeth,
the
baby
(John)
in
Elizabeth’s
womb,
leaped
with
joy.
Elizabeth
was
immediately
filled
with
the
Holy
Spirit,
and
before
Mary
could
tell
her
anything,
she
already
knew
that
Mary
was
pregnant
with
Jesus.
This
must
have
been
very
comforting
to
Mary.
Mary
visited
Elizabeth
for
about
three
months
before
she
left.
After
she
left,
Elizabeth
gave
birth
to
a
baby
boy.
Neighbors
and
relatives
celebrated
and
rejoiced
with
Elizabeth
as
they
believed
that
the
Lord
showed
her
favor
because
she
could
never
have
children.
It
was
custom
in
those
days
to
only
name
the
baby
on
day
number
eight,
when
he
was
circumcised,
and
it
was
tradition
to
name
the
son
after
his
father.
Elizabeth
however
insisted
that
the
baby
will
be
named
John.
Her
relatives
were
concerned
about
this
and
asked
Zacharias
what
he
would
want
the
name
of
the
baby
to
be.
As
Zacharias
still
could
not
speak,
he
wrote
on
a
tablet
that
the
baby
boy
must
be
named
John.
Immediate
his
mouth
was
opened
and
he
could
speak
again
and
he
was
filled
with the Holy Spirit!
John
grew
up
to
be
‘John
the
Baptist’.
He
fulfilled
the
prophecy
in
Malachi
3:1
where
it
was
prophesied
that
a
messenger
will
come
before
Jesus
to
prepare
the
way.
We
learn
from
Elizabeth
that
no
matter
what
happens,
you
should
stay
faithful.
Although
she
could
not
have
children,
she
never
turned
from
God.
She
was
totally
obedient
to
God
when
she
decided
to
call
her
baby
John,
even
though
her
family
opposed
this
idea.
We
know
that
Elizabeth
brought
John
up
to
become
a
great
prophet,
which
means
that
from
a
young
age
she
told
him
about
his
purpose
and
taught
him
about
the
Lord.
This
should
be
an
example
to
all
parents.
We
learn
from
Elizabeth
that
God
can
use
all
people,
including
woman
to
fulfil
His
purpose.
Never
think
that
because
you
are
a
woman,
or
because
you
are
no
longer
young,
that
God
cannot
use
you.
Elizabeth
had
an
important
message
for
woman:
“Blessed
is
she
who
believed,
for
there
will
be
a
fulfilment
of
those
things
which
were
told
her
from
the Lord.” (Luke 1:45)
